The last couple of days I’ve been thinking about the sky in photographs in particular clouds and/or lack of detail. The first picture is a photograph I took yesterday and the clouds really impact the scale of the whole image. Alec Soth, Magic Castle Inns and Suites, Kissimmee Florida 2012. Ansel Adam’s Thunder Cloud, Unicorn Peak, Yosemite National park, California, c. 1967. Both these images have the clouds creeping up about to envelop the scene. Finally Roy De Carava, Women and Children at Intersection 1952. Ever since seeing De Caravas images I was struck by how blank the sky tended to be. His images said City to me more than anything I’d seen before.
